I believe the watermellon can actually be grown in a wood box instead of a glass container, but near the time that it is to ripen you'd want to remove the box from around it to get light and help it ripen. By that time the shape should already be set. They do the same thing with gourds too. The shape to a certain degree doesn't matter. If it were me, I think I'd grow it in a container made from thick plexi-glass. The plexiglass could be dissassembled unlike the glass could.

it needs to be clear (colourless) glass to let maximum light through, which the melons need to ripen. you also need to check to make sure there is no rot occuring during the growing process, as confining the melons in this way means that air cannot circulate round them too well and they may rot if they stay too moist.
