the glass bottles you are asking about are carboys, they used to be used for transporting things like acid and liquid chemicals in before the gardeners got involved, (the demi-johns that others are talking about are actually gallon jars used during the fermentation stage of wine-making)


the large glass jars should be available from any good garden centre.


when setting these bottle gardens up remember to add a layer of activated charcoal in the bottom to assist in stopping the soil going foul, then put in a layer of fine gravel and then add the potting compost that you are going to plant into.

The ones that have leaded bits in between so that they are like miniature conservatories and fancy shape are teraniums (not sure if that is spelt right).
