Arts and craft stores sell enamel paints that you cure in the oven. You could paint the outsides with those. Also, you can buy glass etching kits/supplies at Michael's and A.C. Moore.
Etching is the most permanent solution, but it does involve some pretty harsh chemicals, so if you've got kids involved with this project, you may want to stick with paint.
