Will rubbing compound stratch clear plastic or glass?

I'm trying to remove wax off lights without damaging them.Will rubbing compound stratch clear plastic or glass?
If you are trying to remove discoloration from headlights, they sell kits at good auto-parts stores. Give up the 'Big Mac'; for lunch a couple of days and spend the money.You wouldn't regret it.

I think I may be qualified to answer this. I have owned a body shop for 13 years. Yes, rubbing compound will scratch the plastic on most items, glass will not be harmed by rubbing compound. There are fine compounds that a paint store will have that will be safe for plastic, but not use regular rubbing compound
