What is the clear plexi-glass-like material that becomes opaque when an electrical current is applied?

I have seen this in multiple television shows, like on an episode of Bull Run. It's like a license plate cover that becomes opaque when a current is passed through it. They use it in high end architecture for bathroom stall doors, privacy screens, etc.

I've always wondered what it's called and how much it costs. What is the clear plexi-glass-like material that becomes opaque when an electrical current is applied?
It is essentially a large L.C.D. liquid crystal display such as that used on calculator and watch displays. I don't know about cost but I presume it is proportional to the size of the device. To give you an idea they use L.C.D. shutters for auto darkening welding helmets and they cost between 50 - 100 dollars for an LCD of about 20 square inches in size. What is the clear plexi-glass-like material that becomes opaque when an electrical current is applied?
So you are out to deliberately break the law in some way?

Save some money, slow down, or don't commit that crime.
